North at Lighter Quay

2004 NZIA New Zealand Award - for North at Lighter Quay, Viaduct Basin
2004 Property Council of New Zealand - Excellence Award for North at Lighter Quay, in the Multi-Unit Residential category

North is a luxuriously appointed, high quality apartment building which enjoys expansive views out over Auckland's Viaduct Basin. The flagship building at the head of the Lighter Quay development (refer also to the masterplan by Studio Pacific), North is centred around three separate internal cores, allowing the creation of innovative double-sided waterfront apartments with excellent sunlight, privacy, and views. One side of the building faces north towards the Waitemata harbour, while the other faces south onto the central navigable waterway that is the focus for the surrounding buildings. Bold, simple lines to the apartments, and solid stone-clad walls with modulated windows give a strong lead for quality development in the area.

The building is a gracious addition to the architecture of the Basin, with tall slender timber columns rising five floors up from the water's edge to support the thin, flat, floating roof. The rich colour of the timber cladding to the columns is set off against the creamy limestone cladding, and combines with the glazed balconies and external adjustable louvres to create a rich texture to the façade. Access to light, water, and privacy, along with their high level of specification have made these apartments sought after and ensure they continue to reach the highest levels of the market.
