Carillon and Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, Wellington

Studio Pacific have restored the historic building fabric of and around the Carillon and the Hall of Memories at the National War Memorial, Wellington. Work includes repairs to the historic balconies, steel windows and patent glazing skylights. The surrounding paving, steps, balustrades and landscaping around this Category 1 historic building have also been upgraded. The refurbishment of the National War Memorial forecourt provides a setting for the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

Designed by Kingsley Baird, The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a careful addition to the fabric of the National War Memorial. Its central idea is the placement of a bronze cloak, inlaid with the stars of the Southern Cross in greenstone, over the blackness of the Tomb itself.

The Unknown Warrior, whose remains were recovered from France, was interred in the new Tomb on the 11th of November 2004.
