Bonnett Edwards House, Wellington
Winner NZIA Local Award, Residential 2006
Winner Origin Timber Design Award, Engineering Excellence, 2003
Set on a hillside high above Ngaio, this slender house is perched along the natural ridgeline of the site. From the side, its narrow box form appears to hover lightly over the trees, with the solid charcoal-coloured garage anchored in the hillside beneath. The upper level is perched on delicate struts that look as if they are tethering the house to the ground rather than holding its weight. A cantilevered deck projects out into the air, with a white frame above creating a geometry of air and clouds.
Full height glazing means that the Wellington backdrop of hills, city and farmland become the interior walls of the house. A plywood floor with a high gloss reflects sheens of light and colour throughout the house. A crisp palette of black, bright green and silver, with accents of orange, gives the house a contemporary and polished feel.
