Beaumont Quarter Stage Two Housing, Auckland
Netherlands-based architecture and urban design firm S333 collaborated with Studio Pacific to design the Stage Two houses within Studio Pacific’s Beaumont Quarter masterplan.
The houses are built on some of the most varied and challenging topography in Auckland. Half of the houses are sited on a narrow strip of land immediately adjacent to the neighbouring boundary, which prompted the development of a set of unique designs employing central courtyards to bring light into the living areas.
The remaining houses were designed to cling onto the edge of a steep man-made cliff at the rear of the site. Stepping down to follow the line of the cliff, the houses offer spectacular views over Victoria Park to the city and harbor beyond. Because of the constrained nature of the site, the creation of public outdoor spaces was also important. An elevated public boardwalk links the houses and provides access to the upper ‘cliffhanger’ houses as well as offering a space for strolling and enjoying the view, while the rooftops of the ‘leapfrog’ houses below double as public gathering spaces.
