North at Lighter Quay

2004 NZIA New Zealand Award - for North at Lighter Quay, Viaduct Basin
2004 Property Council of New Zealand - Excellence Award for North at Lighter Quay, in the Multi-Unit Residential category

North at Lighter Quay is a luxuriously appointed apartment building in Auckland’s Viaduct Basin. The flagship of the Lighter Quay development, masterplanned by Studio Pacific, the building’s astute design has ensured that its forty high-quality apartments offer exceptional waterside living.

The building’s modulated, lightly nautical form represents a gracious addition to the architecture of the Basin, with tall, slender timber columns, like the masts of classic yachts, rising five floors up from the water’s edge to support a thin, flat, floating roof.  The rich colour of the timber is set off against creamy Portuguese limestone cladding; these combine with glass balconies and adjustable external louvres to create a richly textured façade.

Internally, the building is structured around three separate cores, creating innovative double-sided apartments with excellent sunlight, privacy and views out over the water. All apartments run from north to south, with the terraces at both sides collecting both morning and evening sun, and range in size from one-bedroom, one-bathroom to four-bedroom, four-bathroom residences. A deep reveal window in the main bedroom offers magnificent morning views, while the louvred face of the building provides privacy for the glazed breakfast room. A small, refined palette of materials, comprising limestone, clear, sandblasted, blue-green and back-painted glass, jarrah and cedar timber, aluminium and bright stainless steel, is employed in the interiors, completed by fittings and fixtures of the highest quality.
