East Day Spa, Melbourne
Luxury New Zealand-based day spa operator East Day Spa opened its first Australian day spa in early 2010. Located in the historic five-star Intercontinental Hotel in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, the spa is perfectly situated to provide hotel clients with authentic eastern spa treatments. Having previously undertaken design consultation work for East Day Spa in Auckland, Studio Pacific was asked to undertake the design and fitout of the Melbourne spa.
A fusion of east and west influences and modern and ancient healing therapies forms the philosophy behind the East Day Spa brand. This concept underpinned the fitout design. Smooth modern lines and polished joinery are combined with a palette of textured materials in neutral tones to create a subtle backdrop to the client’s collection of Balinese artworks, statues and furniture. Full-length silk drapery gives an elegant softness to the reception area, with structured lighting subtly illuminating the silky folds and picking up the textured wallpaper. Retail displays are set in in simple white alcoves with concealed LED lighting.
Each spa room includes a feature patterned wallpaper, with its own individual bright colour scheme, that extends partway out into the hallway, offering a glimpse of the interior. Full height lacquered bamboo at the door of each room adds texture and a sense of eastern tradition.
