20 Customhouse Quay wins Excellence in Steel Awards

Studio Pacific’s new 14 level office building at 20 Customhouse Quay has won the Over $3m category and was also judged the Overall Supreme Winner at the Excellence in Steel Awards.

The awards celebrate steel construction projects that showcase efficiency, cost effectiveness, application of sustainability principles, aesthetics, best practice, outstanding teamwork, great safety management and innovation.

Studio Pacific was the architect for 20 Customhouse Quay, working in a team led by Newcrest, with MJH Engineering and Dunning Thornton providing engineering services.

The building sets a new standard in workplace safety, value and design. The glass façade provides a striking crystalline, sculptural form coupled with exceptional structural performance and resilience, and five star green rating. The diagonally braced steel diagrid, with base isolation, is stronger than a conventional tower frame but uses 20% less steel and provides 180% NBS. The architectural expression of the façade follows the diagrid structure with delicate creases and folds. This building redefines the Wellington waterfront skyline and provides an outstanding, highly efficient contemporary workplace with good natural light and incredible views.

20 Customhouse Quay was selected as the Overall Supreme Winner by unanimous vote, with the judges praising the building's outstanding execution and commenting that it is one of the best projects they’ve seen for a long time.
