In March of this year PrefabNZ launched their SNUG Competition. A challenge to design a small prefabricated dwelling suitable for your typical backyard.
Studio Pacific wanted to support this initiative and contribute to the conversation on New Zealand’s complex housing issues. Employing construction methodologies and innovations in thermal envelope design that the Studio has been developing, the SNUG challenges industry norms with respect to dwelling size, affordability and performance.
In its most basic form, the SNUG provides a 35m2 open, adaptable space, with options for the dwelling to grow within and outside of the basic shell provided. It offers endless possibilities for living, as both a standalone house (on grade or elevated) and as ancillary space to an existing dwelling. A dwelling that can adapt to the changing needs of its diverse occupants.
