We are delighted to share that Tākina – Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre has been shortlisted in the Public Architecture category of the 2025 NZIA New Zealand Architecture Awards.
As one of 61 projects nationally shortlisted across 12 categories this year, Tākina joins some of the most compelling new work from Aotearoa, recognised for design quality and contribution to place.
Designed by Studio Pacific for Wellington City Council, and developed by Willis Bond, Tākina responds to its local context on Wellington’s waterfront. Its flowing glass form was shaped by the harbour, wind, and surrounding landforms, and draws on the Māori creation story of Te Ūpoko-o-te-Ika-a-Māui.
Behind the building’s sculptural glass skin, the interior is deliberately restrained, organised around a series of oak-clad inner volumes that shift in tone from dark to light as visitors move upwards – reflecting a transition from earth to sky.
Tākina is the first convention centre in New Zealand to achieve a 5 Green Star design and custom-built rating – awarded by the New Zealand Green Building Council. The centre emits up to 70% less carbon and uses significantly less energy than similar buildings. It also houses the country’s largest exhibition space and conference facilities for up to 2,000 people.
The jury tour will begin in mid‑August, with winners announced at an awards ceremony in November at Te Pae in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Congratulations to Wellington City Council, Willis Bond, and the entire team who helped bring Tākina to life.
