Studio Pacific is proud to celebrate a significant milestone of the Palmerston North Airport Terminal redevelopment, following Palmerston North Airport Limited’s approval to proceed with the terminal rebuild. This moment marks a powerful vote of confidence in the project’s vision and in the value of long-term investment in regional infrastructure.
A Terminal Designed for the Future
Our concept for the new terminal places people at its heart. It aims to create a welcoming, safe and highly functional space that improves the travel experience for all airport users, while responding to the region’s ambition to become a more connected, resilient and future-ready hub.
The design takes cues from the traditions of Rangitāne, their relationship to ngahere (forest), with a light-filled interior and strong timber diagrid elements. These reflect the tāniko patterns of a kaitaka (cloak), offering an expression of protection in relation to the concept of tuia te muka tangata (weaving together the bonds of humanity). A flexible layout will allow the terminal to adapt as the needs of the region grow and change over time.
Supporting Regional Growth and Resilience
Palmerston North Airport plays a vital role in linking the central North Island to the rest of the country and beyond. The new terminal will not only uplift the experience for passengers but also enhance freight capability and strengthen the airport’s strategic role in national logistics.
We commend the Council’s forward-thinking approach to infrastructure investment – an approach that recognises the long-term economic and social benefits this development will bring to the region. We are delighted to continue working in partnership with the Airport and stakeholders to deliver a terminal that meets both todays and tomorrow’s needs.
A Studio Pacific Collaboration
Our team is grateful to be part of this transformative project – one that exemplifies our commitment to designing inclusive, sustainable, and community-focused spaces. We are privileged to be working alongside mana whenua and Palmerston North Airport in bringing about this building. With detailed design now completed, we look forward to sharing more as the project moves towards delivery.
