Two of our Studio Pacific Architecture and Design Scholarship recipients recently visited Te Ara Whetū, the new library under construction in Waikanae, to spend time with members of our project team, our client, and each other.
For Leilani and Manaia, it was an opportunity to experience architecture beyond university projects. Walking through the live site, they heard directly from the project team and gained a deeper understanding of the many decisions that have shaped the building. This experience gives valuable context to the ideas they’re exploring in their studies.
Te Ara Whetū also offered insight into how engagement is a critical part of the design process. Hearing how relationships with mana whenua, community groups, and stakeholders have informed the project helps connect what students are learning about engagement, identity, and place with the realities of professional practice.
For Leilani and Manaia, experiences like this are an important step towards becoming thoughtful, confident designers, grounded in the people and places their work will serve.
