Contact Energy has opened its new Auckland workplace on Level 21 of the HSBC Tower, marking a considered move into a full-floor tenancy on Quay Street.
Delivered by Studio Pacific Architecture in collaboration with Studio DB, the fitout supports the Contact Energy team’s relocation within the building, creating a new workplace with expansive views across Tāmaki Makaurau and the Waitematā Harbour.
Fast-paced and practical, the project centred on a clear goal: to create a workplace that supports Contact Energy’s people, reflects its identity, and makes careful use of an existing fitout.
Creating value through adaptive reuse
The Level 21 tenancy had previously been occupied and included a number of high-quality finishes and usable fitout elements. Studio Pacific worked with Contact Energy and Studio DB to understand what could be retained, adapted, or reused, and where new work would add the most value.
This helped minimise demolition, reduce unnecessary waste, and support a more efficient delivery process. Existing furniture selections were reused wherever possible, and new construction was focused on the areas where spatial change was needed to better support Contact Energy’s way of working.
This approach brought practical benefits, helping the project meet its programme and budget requirements while aligning with Contact Energy’s wider commitment to sustainability and circular thinking.
A new home for Contact Energy in Tāmaki Makaurau
The strategic brief called for a workplace that felt welcoming, flexible, and unmistakably Contact.
Design principles that included “human energy first”, “it’s good to be home”, and “connection at the heart” helped shape a distinct workplace experience. The completed fitout brings together a range of settings for focused work, collaboration, hybrid meetings, hosting, and informal gathering.
At the centre of the design is a generous social heart, supported by warm materials, comfortable furniture, layered lighting, and touches of Contact Energy’s distinctive red. The result is softer and more personal than a typical corporate office, with a lived-in quality that encourages people to come together.
The workplace also makes the most of its elevated position in Auckland’s CBD. Harbour views are part of the everyday experience, supporting wellbeing and giving the space a strong connection to its setting.
Collaboration from briefing to delivery
The project was delivered through close collaboration between Contact Energy, Studio DB, and Studio Pacific.
With a clear brief, a strong shared understanding of the Contact’s goals, and a focus on practical decision-making, the team was able to move quickly while protecting the quality of the outcome.
For Contact Energy, the new workplace is a flexible and welcoming Auckland base that supports connection, hybrid work, and future ways of working.
