Meet Leilani Stempa-Gray – Studio Pacific Architecture and Design Scholar for 2026

Each year, the Studio Pacific Architecture and Design Scholarship supports a young person at the very beginning of their journey into architecture at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.

For this year's recipient, Leilani Stempa-Gray, that journey is just getting started. With the academic year now underway, we spoke with her about what sparked her interest in architecture, and what she’s looking forward to.

When did you first start thinking about architecture as a possible path for you?

I first started thinking of architecture as a possible pathway in Year 12 when I attended the Victoria University Open Day.

Initially I was set on building or construction as a career but after listening to the lectures at the open day, and seeing the models made by the students, it inspired me to explore architecture.

Looking back, I realised I might have already been drawn to doing something along the lines of architecture, because I always felt excited after reimagining setups of spaces in my own home. I also think that architecture sounded like the best place to express my creativity – to create something both functional and beautiful.

Are there parts of your background, culture, or upbringing that you think will shape how you approach design?

Of course! I think my background and culture will strongly influence how I approach design, especially being Samoan and Māori. Even though I didn’t grow up speaking the languages, I’ve always felt connected to my cultures through art, patterns, and dance. Because of that, I think I will take those values with me when I design. Things like community, connection, and creating spaces where people can feel comfortable and welcome. I want the spaces I create to have meaning behind them and not just look good.

With Trimester One underway, what are you most excited to learn or explore?

I am so excited to meet new people and experience life as a university student in a new and positive environment where creativity and curiosity is encouraged. I am also curious about how ideas are turned into real buildings and all the processes that are taken to design buildings.

What does being part of the Studio Pacific team mean to you as you head into your first year of study?

It truly means a lot to me as they have given me a great foundation and support system to help me grow through my first year of study. It has also motivated me to hopefully do well in all my courses this year, and to work hard and make the most of this valuable opportunity.

Last but not least, what would you say to someone your age who’s curious about architecture but not sure where to start?

Honestly, if you’re curious about architecture, I’d say ‘start small’. Try redesigning spaces on paper or rearranging areas in your own home, even something like your bedroom. Also, when you’re out in the city, notice the buildings around you and ask what makes them interesting or memorable.

The real sign for you to do architecture is if you get excited imagining spaces that don’t exist yet. If that gets you curious or makes you want to experiment, then I think architecture is for you.
