Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington

2013

In 2010 Studio Pacific was commissioned to upgrade and extend what was then the State Services Building.

The main extensions are in lightweight construction sympathetic to the existing building aesthetic but with enlarged areas of double glazing. The building entry experience has been significantly improved with new auto-opening glazed doors, upgraded finishes and an enlarged double height volume in the lobby.

A major upgrade and modernisation of services was carried out, including a third passenger lift, new energy efficient lighting, and new active chilled beam air conditioning. Other building improvements include improved thermal insulation to the building envelope, landscaped external terrace areas on the top floor, new abseil access points for improved building maintenance access, bike parking areas and showers.

The external plaza (a public space provided by our client) has also been upgraded and modernised. This was carried out in association with Isthmus Group Landscape Architects. The design replaces the original brick paved areas with contemporary stone elements and extensive built-in seats and windscreens.

Work was completed in April 2013 and the tenants of the upper levels, the NZ Rugby Union, obtained naming rights and carried out a branding exercise on the exterior of the building.
