Te Puna Enabling Structure provides a vital new connection between two national institutions: Te Puna – the National Library of New Zealand, and Te Rua – Archives New Zealand’s new purpose-built facility.
Studio Pacific designed the exterior cladding of Te Hono, a two-level, base-isolated link bridge that connects the two buildings. The connection supports operational efficiency, enables future collaboration, and enhances public accessibility between the institutions. More than a corridor, the structure is a symbol of the preservation of Aotearoa’s taonga.
Co-Design Partnership
Developed in close partnership with Taranaki Whānui co-design collaborators Tihei, the Enabling Structure draws on the history, traditions and the sites connection to Pipitea Pā and its surrounds. Together, the design team explored an architectural expression that enhances the visibility of mana whenua and their connection to site.
The exterior cladding of the bridge references traditional forms and symbolism in contemporary ways. The Taupoki (shroud element), articulated through folded modular aluminium panels, evokes the layered folds of a kaitaka (cloak). The splayed white Huka elements adorn the Kura-red elements of the Taupoki. The Huka add a dynamic texture to the façade, the active movement referencing atmospheric effects such as snow, rain, light showers and – metaphorical expressions of spiritual life-giving energies descending from the heavens.
Internally, the Enabling Structure is designed as a contemplative passage. Warm dark timbers and subdued lighting create a calming experience, recognising the transition between two guardians of national heritage. Custom pipi-shaped light fittings reference the pipi beds of Pipitea and further embed place-based storytelling within the spatial experience.
